BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS: Shortlisted candidates announced for UN Working Group

Summary: A UN Consultative Group, appointed to interview candidates for the new UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, have announced the shortlisted candidates in preparation for the appointments at the 18th Session.

Background

After the Human Rights Council endorsed a new set of Guiding Principles on business and human rights, a UN Working Group was set up with prospective candidates for the group to be interviewed and then appointed during the 18th session of the Council.

With the disappointment of seeing children's rights excluded from the Guiding Principles, the nomination process for the five independent experts who will make up the Working Group has taken on greater importance.

Shortlisted Candidates

A number of candidates were interviewed for the five Working Group positions, from five regional groups. A Consultative Group then shortened the list to three candidates per regional group ready for the appointment process to be conducted during this month's regular session.

Children's Rights Representation

CRIN looked through the initial set of candidates to assess whether any of them had a focus or interest in children's rights. The results were discouraging, however there were a few candidates with some experience of children's rights issues.

One of these was shortlisted for the representative of the Asia Group:

  • Ms Gadis Arivia, an NGO Executive Director from Indonesia, who's past roles included managing a human rights education programme in schools and producing films on the sale and trafficking of children. Read more about Ms Arivia's background.


The Elections

The five members of the new UN Working Group will be appointed during the 18th Session of the Human Rights Council which is scheduled to take place from 12 - 30 September this year.
