[1 November 2007] - A study by The University of Auckland indicates that about one in four New Zealand women have been victims of child sexual abuse before the age of 15.

23 per cent of women in urban areas and 28 per cent in rural areas experienced some form of sexual abuse as a child.

Since the end of the civil war seven years ago, the Sierra Leonean authorities and child welfare agencies have been battling to remove children from the diamond-mining fields, a trend which began at the height of the conflict, when children were abducted by rebel forces and coerced to work in the mines.

"It is now a major post-conflict problem and a threat to social stability," remarks Patrick Tongu of the Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD), which monitors mining activities in the country.

UNITED STATES: End Life Sentences for Youth Offenders

The US Congress should pass a proposed law to end the sentencing of youth offenders to life in prison without the possibility of parole, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to members of the House Judiciary Committee. At least 2,574 individuals in the United States are serving these sentences for crimes they committed before they were 18 years old. The United States is the only country that uses such sentences for crimes committed by juveniles.

Marta Santos Pais fue designada la Representante Especial sobre la Violencia contra los Niños y Niñas en la ONU.

El viernes 1º de mayo el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas designó a Marta Santos Pais como su Representante Especial del Secretario del Organismo sobre la Violencia contra los Niños y Niñas.

Tres años después del Estudio sobre la violencia contra niños y niñas se cumple una de sus recomendaciones, muy esperada por la comunidad internacional.

BANGLADESH: Child jockeys get cash

A delegation from the United Arab Emirates has paid $1.43m in compensation to hundreds of former child camel jockeys in Bangladesh.

The money will be distributed by the Bangladesh home ministry to 879 former jockeys who will each receive between $1,000 to $10,000, officials say.

The children eligible for payments have been identified by the UN children's agency in a country-wide survey.

The UAE says the money will help the children to re-integrate into society.
